This is two of the pod of nine Killer Whales I photographed in Alaska.
While my wife Mary and I were at Homer, Alaska on a Sea Otter photography trip we were having dinner at a restaurant on Homer 'Spit' when a pod of Orcas came almost to shore. We raced out of the restaurant and down the shore but were disappointed when the Orcas moved off before we could get there.
The next day was beautiful calm weather so we rented a 16 ft. boat for a four mile trip over to '60 Foot Rock' where there were a number of Sea Otters. On the way over Mary commented wouldn't it be nice if we saw the Orcas! Twenty minutes later there they came, a pod of nine Orcas.
We saw the Orcas for over two hours as the Orcas hunted migrating Salomon in the area. On one occasion the Orcas surfaced within feet of our small boat, which was exciting, to say the least.
