This baby Giraffe was just born.
He had stood up for the first time when we took this photo.

While we were in Kenya, my wife Mary and I saw and photographed all three kinds of Giraffes. The Reticulated Giraffes were photographed in Samburu and the Rothchild Giraffes were photographed at Lake Nakuru with the Flamingos in the background.

At Lake Nakuru we saw two male Rothchild Giraffes in a prolonged bout of necking, or fighting. Male Giraffes necking circle each other and attempt to hit each other with a roundhouse swing of their heads from the ground up toward the underside of the other Giraffe. The winner can then exert dominance over the loser.

The highlight of our Giraffe sighting was in the Masai Mara. There Mary found a Masai Giraffe and her newborn calf. We didn't see the calf born but the it was still wet and trailing it's umbilici cord. We saw it take its first steps and we saw it nurse for the first time. It was an exciting plus in the Giraffe watching area.
