The entrance to Upper Antelope Canyon near Page, Arizona.
When I decided that I wanted to get some of those wonderful abstract images that occur in the very narrow canyons called 'Slots' I traveled to Page, Arizona.
Slot canyons are formed by seasonal rivers flowing over soft sandstone. They may be 60 feet deep or more and only a few feet wide. They are favorite haunts of photographers because of their unique shapes and the constantly changing patterns of light.
Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon are two of the most photographed slot canyons. They are located on a Navaho Indian Reservation near Page. Page is in the remote Four Corners area of Arizona and is the town originally built to house the workers on the Glenn Canyon Dam. Lake Powell backs up from the Glenn Canyon Dam.
It requires a four wheel dive vehicle to reach Upper Antelope Canyon but there are several operations in Page taking tourists to Upper Antelope by four wheel vehicle. You walk in Upper Antelope at ground level and simply stroll through the fairyland of abstract shapes.
Lower Antelope Canyon is in an altogether different class. Lower Antelope is where the 11 hikers/photographers recently drowned in a flash flood. At one time the Indians provided ladders to access Lower Antelope but most entries have been by repelling.
