I took this photograph from one of the helicopters carried on the ship.
We spent a week in ice conditions like this on our trip to the Antarctic Continent.

Antarctica is a unique place that is about as close to being 'Out of this World' as you can get without having traveled on the Space Shuttle. A surprising number of people don't really have any idea of just how far away and remote Antarctica is. We can tell this from some of the questions we get asked at our art show displays. Such as:

What airport do you fly into in Antarctica?
None: There are no airports in Antarctica.

Do you stay in a hotel in Antarctica?
No: There are no hotels in Antarctica.

Almost all travel to Antarctica is via ship. Starting in 1993 the Russians refurbished two of their Ice Breakers and put them into commercial service running trips to the Arctic and Antarctica. These Ice Breakers have, for the first time allowed non scientist/researchers access to places in Antarctica that tourists never previously visited.

One of these places, that appealed very much to me, were the Emperor Penguin Rookeries on the ice shelf off Antarctica. In 1994 I booked a trip aboard the Russian Ice Breaker Capatain Drynetsian. The main goal of this voyage was to get us to some of these rookeries.

My trip to Antarctica turned out to be the most exciting photographic adventure I've been on to date. I left from Miami, Fla. for Santiago, Chile on route to Antarctica. The next stop was Punta Arenas, Argentina for a customs check and then on to Ushuaia, Argentina , adjacent to Cape Horn. There I boarded the Russian Ice Breaker, Capatain Drynetsian for my voyage to Antarctica.

There are so many interesting aspects of this trip that I've broken it into the following sections.

My Antarctica Trip Stories

The Drake Passage

The Antarctic Circle Party

Life Cycle of the Emperor Penguin

The German Research Station

The Blue Iceberg from Antarctica

King Penguin Rookeries - South Georgia Island
