Those of you that have seen my work at an Art Show, know the vibrant colors, the exquisite detail, and the exceptionally high quality of the photographs. For those of you that haven't personally seen my work, 'Trust Me', it's very good.
The problem with showing high quality photographs on the Web is the huge image size and impossibly long download times required. Scanning a negative on a high quality drum scanner can produce a file over 150 MB in size. To load an image this size, with a 56 K modem on the internet, might take up to 10 hours.
OK, so were not going to do that. Since your monitor might be only 800 pixels wide, let say we reduce the image to 400 pixels wide, as I have done on this web site. The image size now goes from 150,000,000+ bytes to 336,000 or about 0.2% of its original size. Uncompressed, this image might take over a minute to download to your computer.
Still no good, if want to look at the many, many images I have on this site. So now we get to JPEG compression that is used for almost all the color photographs on the Web. The more compression the faster the image loads and the worse it looks. I have opted for a lot of compression, for as fast as possible loading, with still passable image quality. The 336,000 byte image has been compressed down to 20,000 bytes or less. This is about 5% of the small image or 0.02% of the original.
