Something that's not very evident from this photograph is that, every one of these terraces is covered in a few inches of water. There is a constant flow of water to each terrace controlled by little earthen dams. When it comes time to harvest the rice the dams will be closed to allow the rice patties to dry out for the harvest. Bali has an amazing well engineered system of larger and larger dams to control the water from the many streams coming down from the mountains. |
