This is one of four statues of Ramses II at the entrance of the Abu Simbel temple on Lake Nasser. Lake Nasser is the Nile River backup behind the Aswan High Dam. The statues are five stories tall and were cut into a solid rock mountain. There is an adjacent Temple of Hathor that was also built by Ramses II to honor his favorite wife, Nefertari. In 1965 the temples were blasted out of their rock cliff, sawed into blocks and moved above the raising water from the new dam.
