Ancient Terraced Salt Ponds at Maras Peru

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

These amazingly photogenic salt ponds are terraced down an Andes mountainside in the Incas Sacred Valley near Maras Peru.  The water to fill the ponds comes from a single salty spring.  The Peruvians have been using these ponds to evaporate out salt for generations.  The ponds are still in use today.
