Spanish Dancer in Papua New Guinea

In the Ray and Steven Doan Photographic Collection

This giant nudibranch, which was almost two feet long, is called a Spanish Dancer.  The Spanish Dancer is special among nudibranchs, in that it can swim.  When they are disturbed or threatened they swim off with a beautiful undulating motion, as shown here.  They normally do their coral grazing after dark so you have to go night diving to find them, as we did for this one.
