Serval Cat from Africa

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

The Serval is listed as an endangered species and is seldom spotted in Africa.  It is a relatively small cat, about three feet long, and for its size has very long legs.   It hunts for small rodents and birds.  The Serval has very acute hearing and is able to hear ultrasonic sounds omitted by rodents.  It uses a unique vertical leap to pounce down on its prey and is capable of jumping 10 feet in the air to catch birds.
