Ground Hornbill in Kenya Africa

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

The ugly Ground Hornbill is a large bird the size of a turkey.  It digs in the ground with bill and it also uses its bill as a lever to turn over rocks and logs for prey.  It will eat rodents, hares, snakes, lizards and toads.  The Ground Hornbills also like to fly to grass fires where they feed on the fleeing creatures.   I photographed this bird on the Masai Mara in Kenya Africa.
