Male Impala with his Herd of Females

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

During the mating season dominate male Impalas are territorial because only landlords get to reproduce.  Being the guy in charge is such demanding work that dominate male Impalas seldom last even three months in that role.  Small herds range up to 20 females but herds up to 100 are common.  I photographed this herd in the Masai Mara in Kenya, Africa.
