Hippopotamus and Baby in Africa

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

Hippopotamus spend their days submerged or semi-submerged in ponds or slow moving rivers.  During the middle of the day they often come out to lay on river banks.  In spite of their fat, slow moving looks, hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa.  They kill more humans than any other African animal including Lions and snakes.
