African Spotted Hyena on the Masai Mara

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

Spotted Hyena sort of look like dogs but actually they're related to civets and mongoose.  They are the most efficient of any carnivore because of their exceptional ability to eat practically every part of their prey.  They eat and digest bone, horns and even teeth and they are the only carnivore that eat hides with fur.  They later disgorge the indigestible hair.  This guy was part of a large pack on the Masai Mara in Kenya.
