Flamingo Tongue in the Florida Keys

In the Ray and Steven Doan Photographic Collection

This pretty little sea snail is called a Flamingo Tongue and its really a nasty parasite that prays on soft corals like Gargonian and Sea Fans.  It's about an inch long and the orange circled spots are actually on a very thin mantel or membrane.  The snail withdraws this mantel into its shell when its disturbed.  The mantel is transparent between the spots so the yellow color is the color of the shell.  When you find a dead Flamingo Tongue there are no orange pokka-dots only a bland yellow shell.
