Alligator in Ocala National Forest

from the Ray I. Doan Photographic Collection

This alligator was living in a pond in the Ocala National Forest in Florida.  The green scum is a plant called duck weed.  This green little plant floats on top of the water with its tiny roots hanging down.  As long as there are nutrients in the water these tiny individual plants don't need to root into soil.  If you study this picture you can see three other alligators surrounding the one in the middle.
